A method of extracting metal values from a starting material using thiosulfate as a lixiviant. Metal values can be recovered from solution using a precipitant. The solution remaining after recovering metal values can be treated with a calcium containing material to remove sulfates. A portion of the solution remaining after recovering metal values can be treated with a water treatment step either before or after the addition of the calcium containing material.
