A method and an apparatus are disclosed for dynamically sterilizing oil palm FFB (14) in order to minimize POME generation by sterilizing FFB (14) in a sterilizer (10) by subjecting the FFB (14) to steam (24) at substantial flowrate and quantity, for a time sufficient for the fruitlets to detach from the bunches, and allowing the steam to freely leave the sterilizer (10) as exit steam (26). This results in a decrease in waste steam condensate and thereby a reduction in the amount of POME.
