An apparatus for monitoring a pit lid of a pit, including: a magnetic sensor for measuring the strength of a magnetic field, wherein when the apparatus is installed on the pit lid, the measured magnetic strength indicates whether the apparatus is in proximity to a magnet disposed in the pit; wherein the apparatus is configured to determine, based at least partially on the magnetic strength measured by the magnetic sensor, a status of the pit lid, the status indicating whether the pit lid is closed.
